The last surviving remains of a domestic gasworks in Ireland, this little building was part of the Mount Stewart estate. Built about 1850 for Lord Londonderry in order to generate gas for the estate. Coal was brought to the works by boat and the gas was piped into the house, to fire ovens and provide lighting. It was in operation until the early 20th century.I read recently that, sadly, the body of a new-born baby boy was found in the trees opposite in 2001, the Mount Stewart head gardener has planted a tree in his memory there. His parents, to my knowledge, were never traced. It adds a sombre air to the place which is otherwise exceptionally beautiful with phenomenal views.
